The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of those depths. – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
I have met, have known, and have loved some of these “most beautiful people.”
They have made me laugh; they have made me cry; they have inspired and comforted me with their wisdom and kindness.
One of the things that accompanies Loss is Fear.
I expressed this in two of my poems:
Disability is a loss.
A loss of a body,
A loss of a job,
A loss of a career.
A loss of things you always liked to do.
Like walking through the woods or around the lake,
Like driving a ball straight down the fairway
And joyfully chasing it in pursuit;
Like strolling on the beach hand-in-hand,
And especially like dancing,
And holding your wife. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid.”
I’m afraid because
I’ll never fill another tooth.
I’m afraid because
I’ll never seat that perfect crown.
I’m afraid because
I’ll never create another smile.
I’m afraid because
I’ll never relieve another pain.
I’m afraid because
I’ll never be the healer
I was learning to be. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid.”
