You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of. – Jim Rohn
Two previous blogs dealt with the changes facing me following the treatment of my bipolar disorder and release from the hospital.
The major manic and depressive episodes and the ensuing medical care left me physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted and disconcerted.
Such challenges and experiences were not new to me, but never of this life-changing, consequential magnitude.
The only recourse, in my mind, was to arm myself with hope, resolve, and practiced self-discipline to engage in the battle ahead of me.
Several patients on my floor mentioned that Dr. Kafrissen had a private practice in addition to being the medical director of the hospital.
He was clear and candid, and had little patience with patients who did not demonstrate the will and determination to help themselves. He intimidated me, but I liked and trusted him. And I believed that if I was going to deal with my illness successfully, I needed him. Before I left the hospital, I made an appointment with him to continue my treatment. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid”
