If you are depressed, you are living in the past.
If you are anxious, you are living in the future.
If you are at peace, you are living in the present. – Lao Tzu
If you could choose one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humor. – Jennifer Jones
Depression, Anxiety, and Peace are three states I have visited on my journey through life.
I must admit that I am partial to the State of Peace. However, circumstances sometimes arise that cause me to move on to places I would rather avoid, particularly Depression and Anxiety, nonpartisan states that welcome every human being, not only those with mental or physical illnesses or disabilities.
Regardless of which state I find myself in, I always try to bring a sense of humor along with me; it is a companion that never fails to make my stay more enjoyable…and in some states, endurable.
The doctor said that I had developed a bladder infection due to prolonged use of the apparatus. Since I might have to use a catheter for several months after leaving the hospital, he instructed a male nurse to show me how to insert and remove it myself.
Inserting the catheter was easy when the nurse did it, but for me it was like trying to thread a needle while sitting on a waterbed during an earthquake. The thought of having to perform this procedure for several months at home or, God forbid, at my office made me determined to rid myself of this humiliating contraption once and for all. I continued to insert and remove it until I collapsed with exhaustion.
The next morning, while using the bedpan, my bladder miraculously began to function. Was it coincidence, divine intervention, or sheer willpower? I did not know and, to be honest, I did not care. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid”
