Poetry: An Arrow In My Quiver

No one is immune to the trials and tribulations of life. – Martin Lawrence

A friend of mine who has borne more than his share of adversity once said to me, “You don’t get to be our age without being broken.”

He is a wise man for whom I have much respect, and he, too, has discovered writing to be an effective weapon against the misfortunes of life.

Unfortunately, he is only one of a multitude of people I know who carry heavy burdens.

Nevertheless, they all have found hope, determination, and self-truth to be their allies in the struggle, whether through writing or other means.

In addition to prose, I have picked up poetry along the way to accompany me on the journey.

Day in and day out, sometimes from moment to moment, I was bombarded by emotions that seemed to have no rhyme, reason, nor pattern to their attack. They just came. Once again I picked up my pen and held on.

Disability is a loss.

A loss of a body,

A loss of a job,

A loss of a career.

A loss of things you always liked to do.

Like walking through the woods or around the lake,

Like driving a ball straight down the fairway

And joyfully chasing it in pursuit;

Like strolling on the beach hand-in-hand,

And especially like dancing,

And holding your wife. – Excerpts from “I’m Afraid”

As valuable as poetry has been in my battles against Fear, it is only one of the arrows in my quiver.

There are many more, as you will see.

I offer these thoughts for your consideration.

I encourage you to share your thoughts and opinions regarding my blogs by posting them at the bottom of the Blog page marked: Leave A Reply.
