Sometimes surrender means giving up from trying to understand, and becoming comfortable with not knowing. – Eckhart Tolle
Surrender, like so many things in life, can be seen as either positive or negative depending on the circumstances and one’s perspective.
But when I was impatient, desperate to be in control, mistrustful, or insecure, I often could not change the way I felt. The harder I struggled against these feelings, the stronger they became.
When all else failed, I threw up my hands in frustrated surrender. It was not the best choice, but sometimes it was the only choice. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid”
On the other hand, when I was exasperated, confused, and unable to understand why all of my efforts to combat Fear were failing, I decided to embrace surrender as a positive, helpful ally that could be reinforced by combining it with trust.
In my last blog, I wrote about the ladder which, figuratively speaking, I was constructing at the behest of God whose help I was seeking.
In my mind, total surrender to the God I believed in, must necessarily include trust.
I continued with my project.
After I finally got the first four steps (patience, humility, good humor, and mercy) in order, I decided to bind trust and surrender together and use them as a single, sturdy, top step. The finishing touch was bonding the two side arms (both labeled courage) to the steps. The ladder was ready for a test run. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid”
