The First Step Was Patience

Have patience. All things are difficult before they become easy. – Saadi

The last two blogs dealt with surrender – surrender of my fears to the God I always believed in despite periods of considerable doubt and feelings of abandonment.

In my battles with Fear and all of his children, I utilized a variety of weapons – which I referred to in previous blogs as arrows in my quiver – including patience, humility, good humor, mercy, and trust.

Each one helped me in my struggles; combinations of some or all of them aided me significantly, leading to the conclusion that Fear would eventually be overcome.

Unfortunately, I was wrong; Fear still refused to be subdued.

It was then that I reluctantly and fearfully sought the help of God.

Surrendering my fears and myself into His hands seemed to be the wisest and only choice left for me.

I did not know if I could surrender myself to anyone, not even God. But I knew I needed to try.

As was mentioned and described in the two previous blogs, I built a ladder as instructed and was ready to try it out.

The first step was close to the ground and appeared easy to stand on. But, because I was in a hurry to try the other steps, I kept falling off it.

Patience looked to be made of good, solid material, but it seemed a bit wobbly when I stood on it. Maybe, I thought, I did not fasten it properly. It might need some work.

After many trials and errors, I reached the second step. I tried to step over the first step several times to get there, but my impatience usually resulted in a fall. Eventually, I learned that it was wiser and safer to take one step at a time.

I offer these thoughts for your consideration.
