Mercy Is The Goal

Forgiveness is not always easy. At times, it feels more painful than the wound we suffered, to forgive the one that inflicted it. And yet, there is no peace without forgiveness. – Marianne Williamson

I have been the recipient of mercy countless times in my life; I have been its dispenser as well.

Even for minor infractions, seeking forgiveness or granting it can be difficult; in the case of major transgressions, it may often appear as an impossible task to accomplish.

Mercy is a goal I strive to attain, whether seeking or granting it.

When I am successful, a heavy burden is lifted from my shoulders; I can breathe freely again.

When unsuccessful, the weight  increases and breathing becomes laborious.

The fourth step of the ladder was difficult to reach, and precarious to stand on. Ascending the ladder to reach it was like scaling the face of a sheer cliff. My footing had to be slow, deliberate, and dependent upon the strength of the rungs that preceded it.

Mercy is a gift. A gift, I believe, that God bestows on all His children freely, generously, and unconditionally. It is a gift that I seek, crave, beg for; it is a gift that I treasure, but too often hoard.

Mercy is a gift that is meant to cherish and share unselfishly. But I often find my desire to forgive engaged in a heated battle with feelings of anger, resentment, and pride.

When mercy wins, I stay on the ladder; when it loses, I find myself on the ground, bloody and bruised. And pleading for mercy. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid”
