Stupidity: A Gift From God

Stupidity is also a gift of God, but one mustn’t misuse it. – Pope John Paul II

I love this quote; it made me laugh, and then it made me think…an unbeatable combination, a tool to aid in learning.

In my estimation, Pope John Paul II not only was a gifted teacher but one possessing a good sense of humor.

If you have been following my blogs (all of which are listed on my website), you are familiar with my use of the word ”tools” which, for my purposes, is synonymous with “gifts.”

I must admit that the above quote intrigued and bewildered me until I discovered the various meanings associated with “Stupidity.”

My impatience, anger, and pride are the result in part of injudiciousness or poor judgment.

Failure to comprehend the meaning or purpose of God’s gifts is not necessarily stupidity but, in my case, being “a little bit slow on the uptake.” Furthermore, tossing these gifts aside is imprudent, to say the least.

And, attempting to return these gifts is not only ludicrous, but highly insulting as well.

In spite of my weaknesses, failures, impatience, anger, and pride, I know that God loves me. He continues to give me more and more tools to aid me along the path to Him.

Sometimes I recognize them for what they are; sometimes I look at them and wonder what in the world they could possibly be used for and toss them aside; and, sometimes, because they appear to be a curse rather than a blessing, I foolishly try to return them.

Unfortunately, these tools are not returnable; God always sends them back. Especially, Fear. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid”

I have found that gifts from God come when least expected, may not always be welcome, and often are mystifying.

I also have learned that it is unwise to toss them aside or try to return them; rather they deserve close inspection, contemplation, and the willingness to trust that they are blessings rather than curses.

Or, at least, consider the possibility.

I offer these thoughts for your consideration.

Communication, I believe, is the key to understanding one another.
