Doing It Afraid

The Bible says to ‘fear not,’ but this doesn’t mean you should never feel scared. It means when you do feel fear, keep going forward and do what you are supposed to do. Or as I like to say, do it afraid. – Joyce Meyer

After contracting cerebellitis, I spent a month in the hospital. Physical therapy was a significant part of my treatment.

One of the last things the therapist, Chris, did was to teach me how to climb and descend a mock set of stairs: three steps, a handrail and a platform at the top.

After giving me instructions, I made it to the first step, lost my balance, and fell backwards into Chris’s expectant arms.

She repeated the instructions and told me to try again.

I started at the bottom step again. I managed to climb all three steps, stopping on each one to take a few deep breaths. It was almost impossible for me to believe that learning to walk and climb a few steps could be so difficult.

“That was good,” Chris said. “Now, let’s go down.”

As I turned and looked down at the floor, my hand instinctively tightened its grip on the rail. I was sure that I was going to fall, but Chris encouraged me to try.

Holding onto the rail, I lowered my left foot to the step below. After negotiating the next two steps successfully, I breathed a sigh of relief. – Excerpt from “I’m Afraid”

As a result of the extensive damage to my cerebellum, I suffered a severe loss of balance and coordination; fear of falling was paramount in my mind.

Fear of failure, giving up, not trying was a greater fear.

In this case, I did it afraid.

I offer these thoughts for your consideration.
