Patience, Hope & Humor

Patience is a virtue, and I am learning patience. It’s a tough lesson. – Elon Musk

In the face of chaos, whether internal or external, hope and a sense of humor are means of survival.

Patience aids and enhances their chances of success.

Opportunities to practice patience confront us virtually every day; most of them are of no great consequence:

Waiting in a movie line,

 Waiting for summer vacation,

Waiting to pin the tail on the donkey. –  Excerpt from a poem in “I’m Afraid”

Other circumstances, like lying in a hospital bed with an unknown diagnosis, can be significant reasons for worry, anxiety, and fear:

Waiting for the hiccups to stop,

 Twenty-four hours a day.

Waiting for my eyes to focus,

So at least I can read.

Waiting for my muscles to regain

 Any semblance of control,

So I can speak, or write, or in any way

 Communicate with those I love.

Waiting for the catheter to come out

So I can urinate like a man.

 Balancing on the bedpan,

While I try to move my bowels.

Waiting for the nurse to return,

Waiting desperately to use the toilet,

 Six feet

Or, is it six miles away?

 Waiting for more tests,

Even longer, for the results. – Excerpt from a poem in “I’m Afraid”

Patience can be unbearable at times.

In the face of such adversity, patience demands more from us: commitment, persistence, and the will to carry on.

Hope and a sense of humor should not be forgotten; they help put things in perspective.

Whether the state of affairs is minor or of major consequence, patience, hope and humor are significant allies.
